Angelique Lavariega, 38, of Hazleton, sustained numerous injuries as a result of a one-vehicle crash at 3:40 a.m. April 7 at the intersection of routes 924 and 4033 in West Mahanoy Township, according to state police at the Frackville barracks.

Police said she was treated at the scene by the Shenandoah EMS unit and flown by helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Police said she was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox south on Rt. 924 when it failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with State Route 4033, traveling through the intersection and hitting an embankment head-on. The impact caused the vehicle to go airborne, after which time it struck numerous trees and came to rest in the nearby wooded area.

Police said the woman was not wearing her seat belt.

The vehicle sustained heavy damages and was towed from the scene.

Police said evidence at the scene suggested speeding and alcohol were factors that contributed to the crash.
