Vehicle stops lead to charges

Two separate vehicle stops by Pocono Mountain Regional police has led to charges pending against a driver and a passenger.

On March 31 about 2:16 a.m. police stopped a Ford Focus along SR611 at Center Ave., in Mount Pocono, for a motor vehicle code violation. The driver was identified as Maurice Cooley, 57, of Hanover Township, Luzerne County. Cooley was found to be under the influence and failed field sobriety tests. He was placed under arrest for driving under the influence (DUI). He was transported to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, for a blood test. The DUI charge will be filed, police said.

A warrant check was made on Cooley's passenger, Lamar Bobbett, 26, of Wilkes-Barre. It was found he had an active warrant for his arrest issued to the Luzerne County Sheriff's Department. He was taken into custody and lodged in the county prison pending return to Luzerne.

Also on March 31, about 3:30 p.m., police stopped a vehicle along SR196 at Carraige Square for an equipment violation. In making contact with the occupants of the vehicle officers noted the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A further investigation revealed a passenger, Ariel Gilbert, 21, of Tobyhanna, was in possession of marijuana, which was concealed in his pants. He was placed under arrest and charged for drug possession and tampering with evidence.
