Man sentenced to death for Effort double-murder
STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A former northeastern Pennsylvania prison guard has been sentenced to death for the murder of his live-in girlfriend and their 18-month-old son.
Monroe County jurors deliberated for about three hours Monday night before deciding that 26-year-old Michael Parrish should be executed rather than serving life in prison without possibility of parole.
The panel took less than two hours last week to convict Parrish of first-degree murder in the July 2009 killings of Victoria and Sidney Adams in Effort.
The defense argued that the slayings happened in a moment of passion because Parrish believed Adams was cheating on him.
Defense witnesses said he had traumatic events at an early age and was under stress trying to keep his job and care for a sick child.
