Third Grade students at the Penn Kidder and L.B. Morris Elementary Schools and St. Joseph Regional Academy received new dictionaries on Tuesday, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Jim Thorpe.

The club has been participating in a nationwide program know as "The Dictionary Project" since 2003. This year, Rotarians will give 216 dictionaries to third graders in Jim Thorpe. To date, the club has distributed 1,758 dictionaries.

Third graders were selected since this age group represents a critical juncture in a child's education. In this grade, students make the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."

Educators and parents know the importance of having these students be able to read and write well in order to share knowledge effectively.

Personally delivering dictionaries recently were Rotarians Ronald Sheehan and Randall Smith, demonstrating Community Service in Action.
