A tractor trailer rig crashed along Interstate 81 in Delano Township, Schuylkill County, and then caught fire and was completely destroyed.

State police at Frackville said the accident occurred about 9:20 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. Troopers said David M. Beachy, 68, of Millington, Tenn., was southbound when his 2001 Freightliner FLD120 left the road and traveled about 210 feet along the berm until it struck a tree.

After hitting the tree the rig continued another 120 feet before striking several other trees before coming to rest in a wooded area. Beachy managed to get out of the truck before it burst into flames, troopers said.

Fire companies responding to the scene included Delano and Ryan townships, Mahanoy City Citizens and Good American, Hometown and Quakake.

Troopers cited Beachy for careless driving.
