State police at Fern Ridge are investigating a theft incident in Monroe County.

Troopers said the theft occurred at the Apenzell PPL substation along SR715 in Jackson Township. Troopers said unknown crminals entered the substation and removed about 100 feet of copper ground wire. Troopers said there were safety grounds for the transmission lines that carry 138,000 volts that were ground for the linemen to work on.

One coil of copper ground was on a transformer and two coils of copper ground went to the transmission lines. The incident occurred sometime between 5 p.m. on Oct. 24, and 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 25.

Troopers also probed an attempted burglary. The incident occurred at the residence of John Ruggiero, of 31 Starlight Drive, Birch Hollow Estates, in Effort, Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County.

Unknown criminals attempted to gain entry by prying at a door jam on both the front and back doors. The security alarm apparently scared off the intruders. The incident occurred about 3 p.m. on Oct. 18.
