A Jim Thorpe man was killed and his passenger seriously injured in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County.

State police at Fern Ridge identified the victim as Robert Harvey Kemmerer, 40. Troopers said his passenger, Rebecca Marie Cohen-Kemmerer, 39, of Hazleton, was flown by PennStar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, with severe injuries.

According to troopers the accident occurred about 4:06 p.m. at the intersection of Buttonwood and N. Sycamore drives.

Troopers said the victim was operating a 1987 Suzuki 250 Quad at the above intersection when the ATV left the road for unknown reasons.

The ATV went into a wooded area where the driver and passenger were both thrown from the vehicle. Neither were wearing protective helmets, troopers noted.

Kemmerer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.
