At long last, traffic may again flow freely now that a bridge project has been completed in the Lehigh Gap area.

As of last Friday afternoon, all lanes of the Route 873 bridge were open to motorists for the first time in over four months.

Since May, PA 873 north had been closed and detoured between Mountain Road and Route 248 for work on the bridge over the Lehigh River. The posted detour routed PA 873 north traffic on Main/Diamond Street, Route 145 and Route 248.

Crews worked to replace the wall-like barriers at the edge of the bridge. The work was expected to be completed by Aug. 31, but was reportedly delayed by one month while the contractor awaited supplies.

The work was part of an ongoing $4,632,725 contract to replace parapets on bridges in Lehigh, Northampton and Berks counties.

A bridge parapet is a wall-like barrier at the edge of shoulder on the bridge.
