Could Northern Lehigh School District seek marketing strategies to boost its revenue?

Sherri Molitoris, co-director of Business Affairs/ Human Resources, told the school board on Monday that Advantage 3, Maplewood, N.J., a marketing company has proposed a negotiable contract amount based on student enrollment.

There would be a up front cost, based on students enrollments and areas of concentration within the district that it would wish to market.

Board President Edward Hartman weighed in on the matter.

"Revenue's going to be really difficult this year," Hartman said. "Who knows, this could be an answer."

Superintendent Michael Michaels said the district needs to "spend a lot more time to come up with the pros and cons."

Director Gregory Williams added "if we can get some signs up, it would be perfect; a no-brainer."

Director Mathias Green said the district experienced a similar set of circumstances many years back.

"About 15 years ago, a soda company bought a scoreboard for our community," Green said. "We got a lot of grief."

Director Gary Fedorcha said he couldn't support the idea at this point in time.

"I have a big problem with that," Fedorcha said. "I cannot spend $10,000 for a wish when we have not looked at [other] advanced marketing [strategies]."

Also on Monday, Michaels presented Pennsylvania School Board Association Certificate of Appreciation for School Board Service to directors Lori Geronikos (12 years) and Raymond Follweiler, Jr. (8 years).

Michaels specifically thanked Geronikos, whose term on the board has expired.

"I want to thank Lori for all her years of service," Michaels said. "Twelve years to the students and the public is commendable; we will miss you."

Michaels said Geronikos also served the district well as board representative at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute.

"You've been a pleasure to work with," he said. "Words can't say how pleased I am to have had the opportunity to work with you."

Michaels also thanked Follweiler, and added "all of our board members do a very great job."

In an unrelated matter, high school Principal Robert Vlasaty told the board a couple from Slatington has donated a Weis Market Coca Cola grant in the amount of $10,000, in which the high school will be the recipient.

On a side note, Assistant Superintendent Karen Nicholas told the board the district's recent event at Barnes & Noble was a huge success.

"The event got students interested and motivated in new types of authors, and was well attended," Nicholas said. "An added bonus was we raised over $1,000 with book purchases, which is very exciting point, because we can now use that money to purchase new books."

Director Gregory Williams said the event was a real sight to behold.

"You couldn't barely walk," Williams said. "It was absolutely phenomenal."

Also, Michaels announced that Nov. 13-19 is American Education Week, and thanked all the teachers, administrative staff, and students for their efforts.

Finally, Michaels announced a holiday dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 in the middle school. Afterward, the board will hold its reorganizational meeting at 7 p.m., followed by its regularly scheduled board meeting at 7:30 p.m.
