Firm hired to design water storage tank

Published November 16. 2011 05:01PM

At Monday's Nesquehoning Water Authority meeting, James J. Rhoades, Jr., a representative from Alfred Benesch & Co. presented his firm's proposal to identify and design what will be the most efficient and cost effective new water storage tank to be constructed in the Hauto area.

Upon the recommendation of Nesquehoning borough engineer Ron Tirpak, and a vote by the water authority members, a motion was approved to hire Alfred Benesch & Co. at a cost of $57,700. This was a revised proposal and did not, at this time, include construction administration costs. These costs will be addressed at a later time when the construction work goes to bid.

The first part of the project will be to identify the demand for normal residential, commercial and industrial and fire flow as well as to determine how much water will need to be stored. This information will dictate the size of the tank that will be utilized. Presently, a one-half million gallon tank is in use.

Once the size, type and location of the tank have been established, Benesch & Co. will submit for a permit to DEP. That process takes roughly 180 days. It is estimated that the project will go to bid by November of 2012 and will need to be completed by June 2013.

Most of the funding for the project will come from a $608,000 grant that was awarded to the water authority earlier this year; however, Rhoades estimates that approximately $100,000 will not be covered by the grant and the water authority will need to seek other funding sources. Benesch & Co. will work very closely with the water authority to identify potential cost savings during the entire process.

Monthly updates on the status of the project will be provided for each meeting.

In other business, Supervisor Mark Lopata stated that all hydrants have been flushed and are in the process of being winterized and will be inspected on Thursday. Chemical bids will be available for the December meeting.
