Bear attacks woman, dog in Monroe Co.

A woman and her dog were attacked by a bear on Thursday at 9:27 p.m. in Jackson Township, Monroe County, according to state police at the Fern Ridge barracks.

The victim is Suzan Merritt, 38, of Reeders, who sustained lacerations to her neck, head and arms and was taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, after the incident.

Police said they were called to assist the Pennsylvania Game Commission in the incident.

Police said Merritt put her dog in the back yard, which is fenced in with a five-foot high fence, after which time an adult bear and a cub climbed the fence and attacked the dog. Police said when the victim attempted to retrieve her dog, the adult bear attacked her.

The dog sustained minor injuries in the attack, police said.
