A Schuylkill County man has been charged with selling 16 veterans' grave markers at a county scrap yard.

State police at Schuylkill Haven charged Samuel Steffie, 40, of Schuylkill Haven, with receiving stolen property and desecration of venerated objects.

Troopers said he sold the markers at the USS Achey Scrap Yard in Orwigsburg on July 11.

The markers are the property of the Schuylkill County Department of Veterans Affairs.

He was arrested at the county prison in Pottsville on Wednesday, where he is an inmate on unrelated charges, and arraigned before District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg. Bail was set at $2,500 cash which Steffie was unable to post and he was returned to the prison.
