Motorcyclist killed in Schuylkill crash

A Northumberland County motorcyclist was killed when is bike collided with a sports utility vehicle on Memorial Day. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the accident occurred about 6:19 p.m. along SR901 at Valley Road, in Foster Township, Schuylkill County.

Troopers said Benjamin Thompson, 23, of Mt. Carmel, was operating a 1994 Honda Nighthawk bike eastbound and attempting to negotiate a curve in the road when he lost control.

The bike traveled across the center line into the westbound lane and into the path of a 2001 Ford Expedition operated by Erin Blackwell, 27, of St. Clair. The bike struck the front driver's side quarter panel of the Ford. After impact the bike came to final rest in the westbound lane facing northeast.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene by county deputy coroner Joseph Pothering, troopers said.

Blackwell and front seat passenger, Jonathan Blackwell, 27, same address, both sustained minor injuries in the crash. Two juvenile male passengers, ages two and four, both from Williamsport, were in child safety seats and not injured.

Damages were extensive to the bike and moderate to the Ford, which had to be towed from the scene.
