Mauch Chunk Trust community heroes to be honored

Mauch Chunk Trust heroes Otto Barbush, Weatherly, George H. Duell, Jr., Palmerton, Geraldine "Geri" Haas, Lehighton, and Wayne W. Wentz, Lehighton will be honored Friday, May 27 at the Mauch Chunk Trust Company for community appreciation day.

Each hero was awarded $100 in a donation to the charity of his or her choice.

Barbush's volunteer work has affected: Lion's Club, Weatherly Community Chest, Weatherly Little League, Hazleton Red Cross, AARP "55 Alive" Driving Course, Weatherly PTA, Weatherly Ambulance Association, American Cancer Society and his church.

Barbush has selected Carbon County/Tamaqua and Hazleton Units of the American Cancer Society for his charity.

Duell's volunteer efforts have impacted: Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, local Red Cross, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), local veteran's events and school districts, local military and veterans, annual Washington, D.C. veterans bus trip, Palmerton annual "Stay-at-Home" Fourth of July event, Palmerton Heritage Center, Honorary First Defenders, U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute Program, Korea/Vietnam National Education Center Board, Palmerton American Legion Post Honor Guard, Knights of Columbus - Calvary Council 528, Palmerton Veterans Memorial, Walk in Our Shoes Program and his church.

A donation in his name will be made to Palmerton Area Veterans Memorial.

Haas' volunteer work has affected: Girl Scouts, Camp Shady Grove, Meals on Wheels, Lehighton Library, The Summit, Red Hat Society, Gnaden Huetten Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Lehighton Pool Pals, Lehighton Octoberfest, Lehighton Festival, Red Cross Blood Mobile, Lehighton Halloween Parade Grand Marshall, Lehighton Volunteer of the Year, Lehighton Citizen of the Year, foreign exchange students, Good News Club and her church.

Haas selected Child evangelism of Carbon and Lehigh Counties for her charity.

Wentz's volunteer efforts have impacted: Cub Scouts, Franklin Township Athletic Association, Franklin Township Little League, Phifer's Ice Dam complex, Christman Field, District 18 Little League, Carbon County Babe Ruth League, annual Old-timers Baseball Game fundraiser, Lehighton VFW Post 256, Lehighton American Legion Post 314 Vietnam Last Man's Club, Vietnam Veterans of Carbon County, Mauch Chunk Rod and Gun Club, Central Carbon County Parks and Recreation Commission, Lehighton Area Recreation Board, Lehighton Area School District Board, "Wednesday Lunch Bunch" program and "Free Summer Lunch" program.

A donation in his name will be made to the March of Dimes.

The 2011 Mauch Chunk Trust community heroes will be greeting people from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Street branch, Jim Thorpe.

Free cookies and drinks will be offered all day at all branches of the trust company and free hero sandwiches will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at all branches in celebration of the community.
