Quick response averts major fire in Tamaqua

Published May 21. 2011 09:01AM

Firefighters from Citizens Fire Company Unit 2 as well as other Schuylkill and Carbon County firefighters responded to a structure fire that started around 5 p.m. Friday evening at the home of Anne and Paul Posey on North Lehigh Street in Tamaqua.

"A very quick response from firefighters saved our home and I am very grateful to them," said Anne Posey.

Firefighters and rescuers from Summit Hill, Coaldale, and Tamaqua responded. No serious injuries were reported.

Tamaqua Fire Chief Tom Hartz Jr. said if firefighters had arrived even a few seconds later, the home would have been fully engulfed. Citizen Fire Company were already in their station getting ready to travel to the Firemen's Expo in Harrisburg.

"Since they were already in the station, they responded within seconds," said Hartz.

Two pet cats and a ferret were also rescued by neighbors. Anne Posey said an unknown person knocked at the door to tell the family that smoke was coming from their attic.

The attic was heavily damaged, and clothing, bed and other items were lost. The home also suffered water damage.
