Cheerleaders' clothing drive will help victims in Haiti and Japan

A clothing drive held Saturday by the Storm team of the Northwestern All Star Cheer Association (NACA) at Tumble with Denise Gym, 961 Oak Drive Road, Lehighton, brought more in donations than they ever anticipated.
"We've asked all the cheerleaders to bring their good used clothing and everyone wanted to donate," said Lora Huerst, team coordinator. "The clothing will be sorted and sent to areas who need clothing," said Huerst. "Some of the clothing will be sent to Haiti and some will be sent to Japan to help those victims of the tsunami."
Huerst said that instead of holding the clothing drive for just a day, the drive was extended to a month because of the everyone wanted to help.
Huerst said that the coaches have opened up their homes to serve as a holding area for the donations.
They also collected shoes, belts and handbags, bedding, towels and comforters, stuffed and hard toys.
Registrations for 2011/2012 season will be held 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday June 11 at Tumble with Denise Gym.
All Star Cheering is a competitive sport, requiring dance, tumbling/gymnastics, and stunting. Teams perform 2 1/2 minute choreographed routines at competitions throughout Pennsylvania. The season starts in August and runs through April, with competitions held January - April.
NASA is currently looking for girls for next season. Girls ages 5 to 14 can try out for the mini, youth and junior level squads. Some prior cheering, dance, or gymnastics training is required. Practices are held at Tumble with Denise gym in Lehighton.
