5 Carbon districts approve CCTI budget for 2011-2012

Carbon Career and Technical Institute's proposed budget for 2011-2012 was passed this week as all five county school districts approved the proposed budget.

The five Carbon County school districts - Lehighton, Panther Valley, Palmerton, Jim Thorpe and Weatherly - have an active share in the CCTI budget but only four out of the five school districts needed to pass the budget for it to be confirmed.

The total budget expenditures for 2011-2012 were proposed at $6,929,806. That represents an increase in next year's overall budget of about $228,000 or 3.7 percent.

"We try to be as conservative as possible when deciding on the budget. About 80 percent of the budget is salaries and benefits," said CCTI Business Administrator Jeffry Deutsch.

CCTI begins working on each year's proposed budget around October and November. The Joint Operating Committee at the school usually approves a proposed budget around January.

"We start early on working with the budget because the school districts need to incorporate our budget into their budget," said Deutsch.
