Deputy, suspect killed in gunfight
A Berks County deputy sheriff, who was shot while serving an arrest warrant, and the person wanted in the warrant, were killed in a gunfight last night.
State police at Reading said deputy Kyle Pagerly, 28, was flown from the scene to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was pronounced dead. Also killed in the incident was Matthew Connor, 25.
Troopers said the incident occurred in the first block of Pine Swamp Road in Albany Township, near the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
According to troopers, about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Pagerly was with other officers, including state troopers from Reading, a state police fugitive task force, U.S. marshals and other deputies who went to the residence where Connor was reported living. They had a warrant for his arrest on burglary, firearms and assault charges.
They were met at the door by Connor's girlfriend. While speaking with her Connor ran out the back of the house and into nearby woods.
Pagerly followed Connor who was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. Pagerly told Connor to drop the weapon and the two exchanged gunfire. During the exchange both men were struck. Connor died at the scene.
Pagerly was reportedly struck in the head. He died at LVH this morning.
Pine Swamp Road runs through the forest near the sanctuary. Connor reportedly lived in the residence with his father.
County District Attorney John T. Adams said state police have taken over the investigation of the shooting.
Pagerly has been with the sheriff's department since 2006. He was an Army veteran having served in Kosovo and Iraq as a military policeman according to the sheriff department's website.
