A tractor trailer loader accidentally knocked down a power and communication line pole in the Tamaqua Hess Express parking lot this morning, resulting in multiple power outages in Tamaqua, Walker and West Penn townships.

Downed power lines also resulted in heavy traffic congestion in and out of the Tamaqua and West Penn areas. Traffic was backed up on SR-309 stretching through Tamaqua from the South Tamaqua Plaza all the way to the top of Hometown Hill.

Tamaqua Fire Police closed the northbound lane of SR309 while they detoured traffic around the fallen lines. West Penn Police and Fire Police controlled traffic at the Leiby's intersection, which was without power as well.

Homes and businesses located in the southern section of Tamaqua, including Boyer's Market, were also without power. The total number of people and businesses affected was unknown as of press time this morning.
