A truck pulled down a Verizon communications pole and an attached PPL power line at the Carbon Plaza Mall and SR443 lighted intersection Friday afternoon, knocking out power to 877 residents and businesses in Mahoning Township.

The mishap occurred at about 1:30 p.m. - during the hottest part of the day - when a Barletta construction truck was leaving the new Lowe's site. Utility crews were quick to place temporary supports on the snapped pole and power was restored in a short time.

Volunteers with the Mahoning Ambulance in New Mahoning opened its social hall for a short while to anyone without power or needing relief from the intense heat.
