Heat soars, so does attendance at pool
Visitors eagerly anticipate the noon hour for the Palmerton Memorial Pool to open on Thursday in an effort to cool off amid the excessive heat.
On a day when temperatures reached triple digits, visitors flocked to the Palmerton Memorial Pool in droves.
Perhaps one visitor said it best as she awaited the noon hour to arrive Thursday in anticipation for the pool to open so she could escape the heat.
Gathered alongside the other visitors who anxiously waited by the pool entrance for the summer haven to open, Jeannine Cebrosky of Palmerton uttered the ultimate truism.
"This is the closest thing to heaven," Cebrosky said.
Terry Balliet of Palmerton echoed that thought.
"It's the best thing to do on a hot day," Balliet said. "It beats working in this."
Filled with kids, adults and senior citizens, the pool was indeed the place to be as temperatures soared to over 100 degrees.
Among the many in attendance were children from the Creative Kids School-Age Center, which has branches in New Tripoli and Orefield.
Brent Williams, assistant group supervisor, said the children, grades 1-8, have regularly attended the pool for about eight years.
"The way we're treated is why we come back," Williams said. "We don't mind the little bit of distance, because (general manager) Larry (Arner) and his staff treat us very well."
Just ask Austin Trumbauer, who said he looks forward to a visit at the pool, especially on days like this.
"They have a lot of space, and it's very clean," said Austin, 11. "I like to go on the slide and the diving board."
Lee Arner, assistant general manager of the pool, said the pool has seen attendance swell as the week has gone on.
Since Monday, Arner said the pool has averaged between 700 to 900 visitors, a figure he expected to climb Thursday and today due to the excessive heat.
Arner said Sunday is Christmas in July. The event will start at 1 p.m. There will be games, trivia, snow cones and other items at 2 p.m. There is a $5 admission charge for adults, and a $4 admission charge for children.
The pool is open daily from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10-8 Saturday, and 1-8 Sunday.
Regular daily admission is $5 for children, $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens.
