Katrina Gunklel, 1, a Slatington tot, was killed in a head-on crash Monday night and was not restrained in a child safety seat, police said.

Police said the child was sitting on her father's lap in the front seat.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Monday on Old Post Road, between Maple and Cobbler roads, in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

State police said Randy Teets, 56, of Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, was driving a pickup truck east on Old Post Road at 8:58 p.m. Monday when he failed to make a right curve in the road and crossed over the center line, striking the minivan driven by Dana Frisk, the child's mother. Mark Gunkel, the child's father, was a passenger in the front seat.

Gunkel and the baby were all trapped in the minivan and had to be extricated.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, Gunkel died from head injuries she sustained in the accident. They ruled her death accidental.

Gunkel's parents are both from Slatington. Her mother was last reported to be in critical condition; while her father was in good condition.

Teets was also injured in the crash.

State police and the Lehigh County District Attorney are investigating the crash.
