The Tamaqua Police Department received a phone call Thursday morning stating that an American flag was floating in the Little Schuylkill River near the ABC Hi-Rise. When officers arrived, they noticed the flag (normally mounted on a nearby meter by the Tamaqua American Legion) floating in the river, located just under the Broad Street bridge and adjacent to the Bethany ECC Church at 223 East Broad St. A member of the Tamaqua American Legion waded into the water to retrieve the flag. Anyone with information about the flag desecration is asked to call the Tamaqua Police Department at (570) 668-5000. The incident occurred sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. An anonymous person is offering a $500 reward for the first person who provides a court-used statement that leads to the citation or arrest of the person who threw the flag into the river. Police are still investigating.
