Vehicle stop leads to nine illegals
A vehicle stop in Nesquehoning led to the identification of nine illegal aliens.
Officer Carl Breiner stopped a 2001 GMC van in the 400 block of E. Catawissa St. Breiner identified the driver as Jesus Alberto Fuentes Barreda. He did not have a valid drivers license. Breiner, through the course of his investigation, learned that there were eight other occupants in the vehicle.
Breiner called for back-up with officers from Coaldale, Lansford, and Jim Thorpe responding.
Breiner then contacted federal immigration officials and an agent from Homeland Security interviewed the nine persons and determined all were illegal immigrants. The officer advised that he could not fax detainers and that each occupant will be given a court date and if they don't appear that warrants will be issued for their arrests. The Homeland Security office also advised that if the nine were stopped again after warrants issued, then they could be arrested and detained.
Breiner released the nine but seized the van and had it towed.
