McAdoo teen killed while standing outside disabled vehicle on I-81

A Schuylkill County teen, who graduated from Hazleton High School in June, was killed in an accident Sunday night along Interstate 81 in Hazle Township, Luzerne County.

State police at Hazleton identified the victim as Kayla Bahrey, 18, of McAdoo. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She graduated on June 7 and was a member of the Hazleton basketball team.

Troopers said Bahrey was standing outside a disabled vehicle about 11:30 p.m. along the southbound shoulder when the 2003 Dodge was struck by a 2006 Pontiac.

On impact, troopers said Bahrey was thrown about 15 feet.

Tyler Paisley, 18, of Mountain Top, who was inside the disabled vehicle, was injured and taken to the Geisinger-Wyoming Medical Center, Plains Township, for treatment.

The driver of the Pontiac, Onix Gorbea-Lespier, 49, of Mechanicsburg, Dauphin County, was not injured.

Investigation into the crash is continuing.
