Parryville Council looks into putting salt supplies under cover

Council president Mike Grant relayed information to other council members to reinforce his request to put winter road materials under cover.

Grant said that normally the borough tries to cover cinders under a tarp, but that it rained on them and froze, making workers spend at least an hour chipping them apart before they could be used. Grant said he wanted a solution for long term storage. He said the borough doesn't have access to material which are frozen.

"I know we've gone a long time without a building for materials and maybe we can't afford it, but I'd like to look into it," said Grant. Grant said that he is considering several options, but is most interested in possibly building a shed next door to the borough building if the property can meet set backs and other zoning issues.

Council members discussed an intergovernmental agreement with several of neighboring communities as other options.

Secretary Dana Brubaker said that liquid fuels funds can be used to build a salt shed.

"My biggest concern is keeping bus routes open," he said. "Then my other concern is to keeping Fireline passable."

Grant was notified that an accident happened on Fireline Road because of the icy conditions.

Grant said that the problem was that it snowed and the borough cindered and then there was another layer of snow that fell on top of the cinders.

"Salt doesn't help in that area because it never gets sunlight," he said.

Council approved paying a bill of $124.80 to pay for a part that was needed to raise the borough dump truck bed and turn the drive train.

Grant said that he is looking to purchase a salt spreader, if one could be found at a reasonable cost.

Council also noted that the Riverwalck continuance date will be changed. Possible dates for the hearing will be March 1 or March 4.

Parryville has received preliminary approval for $25,000 in grant funds to build a pavilion at the playground.
