A fire caused considerable damage to a Schuylkill County animal shelter.

State police at Frackville are investigating a fire that caused damage to the Ruth Stienert Memorial SPCA building at 18 Wertz Rd., in Pine Grove Township. The fire was discovered on Friday, Jan. 21, about 9 a.m. by workers at the facility.Workers were able to save most of the animals housed at the facility. However, reportedly two parrots perished in the blaze.The fire originated at or near the counter area, troopers said. No one was injured in the fire but damages were estimated at $30,000.The investigation into the fire is continuing.
