Carbon residents can soon go online for a dog license

Carbon County dog owners will soon be able to buy their dog's license online.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board approved two service agreements for services that will allow residents to purchase a dog license via the Internet.

Ronald Sheehan, county treasurer, explained that the agreements between the county and Value Payment Systems, LLC, and RBS WorldPay Inc., will be used to set up debit/credit card processing for dog licenses right through the county's website.

The county is currently in the process of building a link for this purpose and it will be displayed on the county's homepage at in the near future.

Sheehan said that he hopes to have the program up and running in February.

All dog owners who have a dog that is 3 months or older is required by state law to purchase a dog license for the duration of the animal's life. The cost of a one-year license is $8.45 for males or females; and $6.45 for neutered males or spayed females. Senior citizens age 65 or older and owners with disabilities pay $6.45 for males or females; and $4.45 for neutered males and spayed females.

Lifetime licenses are also available. The dog must be permanently identified with a microchip or tattoo. The regular rates are $51.45 for males or females; $31.45 for neutered males or spayed females. The rates for senior citizens/owners on disability are: $31.45 for males or females; $21.45 for neutered males or spayed females. Lifetime licenses are only available through the treasurer's office.

For those who have not yet obtained dog licenses for 2011, you can currently purchase one via mail by sending an application and payment to Carbon County Treasurer's Office, P.O. Box 247, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229, visit the treasurer's office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; or visit any of the following dog agents: Bedrock Notary, Palmerton; Panther Valley Lumber and Home Center, Lansford; Leslie Notary Service, Lehighton; Halo, Inc., Weatherly; Carbon Notary Express, Lehighton; Marzen Feed and Hardware, Lehighton; Jim Thorpe Pet Center, Jim Thorpe; Joanne Nemeth, Palmerton; Kidder Township Municipal Building, Lake Harmony; Palmerton Borough Building, Palmerton; and Moyer Plumbing Supply and Hardware, Jim Thorpe.
