Tamaqua police, chamber to hold safety and security program
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is teaming with the Tamaqua Police Department for its first breakfast mixer of 2011.
The program, which will feature a discussion of safety and security issues in the community, will be held at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at the Lisa Jane Scheller Student Center of Lehigh Carbon Community College, 234 High Street, Tamaqua.

The deadline for mixer reservations is Friday, Jan. 14.
The mixer is the first evert of the year for the Tamaqua Area Chamber, which helped ring in 2011 with the 13th Annual Eagle Rise on New Year's Eve at the ABC High Rise, which was sponsored by THE TIMES NEWS. Linda Yulanavage, executive director of the chamber, estimated the Eagle Rise drew a crowd of over 700.
Officers, directors elected
The chamber held election of board directors and officers for this year. Officers for 2011 will remain the same as last year, with Todd Miller, president; Susan Fegley, vice president; Serge Chrush, treasurer; and Maureen Donovan, secretary.
Reelected to the board of directors for three-year terms were Miller, Tom Banditelli of Tom's Auto and Marine and Gar Thomas of ETA Benefits Group. Newly elected directors are Major Sharon Whispell of the Tamaqua Salvation Army Corps and Richard Shupp of Schuylkill County Computer Services.
At the board's monthly meeting on Jan. 6, Yulanavage announced that the chamber's 2011 membership campaign is currently under way.
The chamber also attended two recent ribbon cuttings, one at Massar's Notary Service, 25 North Railroad Street, and for Liberty Tax Service, 111 East Broad Street.
Yulanavage said the township saw an increase in purchases of the chamber's gift certificates during the holiday season.
The gift certificates work as two-party checks and are guaranteed by the chamber. Once accepted, businesses deposit the certificates in their accounts, as with a regular check.
The certificates are currenty accepted at participating downtown businesses and are available at the chamber office at 114 West Broad Street and Direct Maytag, 1130 East Broad Street. There is no fee to purchase or redeem.
In other business, the chamber is in the process of sponsoring a new logo and motto contest.
Entries should be submitted seperately on an 8 1/2 by 11 paper in individual envelopes, with the name, address and phone number of the entrant on the back and sent to Tamaqua Logo/Motto Chairman, 512 Second Street, Weatherly, Pa. 18255 or dropped off at the chamber office. The deadline is March 1 by noon.
The chamber is also planning a day at the Reading Phillies for April 19.
