Two men were injured Saturday morning when involved in two separate accidents with both hitting the same large patch of ice across SR443 in West Penn Township. The crash occurred just after 8 a.m. just east of the intersection with Cold Spring Road. The first elderly gentleman was traveling east when he struck the ice causing his pickup truck to spin out of control crossing the two lanes of the roadway and plummeting down an embankment into a field. The truck came to rest on its wheels. As motorists were slowing down for that crash another gentleman traveling east also struck the ice causing his unit to also spin out of control crossing the two lanes and rolling down the embankment into the field. The elderly driver was treated at the scene by members of the Penn Mahoning ambulance and Lehighton paramedics then transported to the Lehighton hospital. The other driver refused medical treatment at the scene. West Penn police and fire officials closed SR443 for several hours till PennDOT crews could respond and treat the icy condition. West Penn township police are investigating the incident.
