A Walnutport hauler stands a strong chance to be retained as garbage collector in Lower Towamensing Township.

Three companies submitted bids to the township on Friday, with McAuliffe Hauling & Recycling, Walnutport, turning in the apparent low bids for one, three and five-year contracts.

McAuliffe, the township's current garbage collector, bid $197,800 for one year; $605,000 for three years; and $1,030,000 for five years.

Those proposals were significantly lower than the next lowest bids submitted by Waste Management, Stroudsburg, which bid $225,264; $697,680; and $1,208,160.

Solid Waste Services, Inc. (J.P. Mascaro & Sons), of Audubon, Montgomery County, bid $230,520; $691,560; and $1,189,920.

Secretary Christine Wentz said the township currently has a five-year contract with McAuliffe that is set to expire April 2.

Wentz said a contract will likely be awarded when the township's board of supervisors meet at 7 p.m. March 8.
