Local couple's grandson attains rank of Eagle Scout

Joseph "Tripp" Karitis III, grandson of James and Ellen Kattner of Jim Thorpe, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Feb. 19.

Tripp, 17, a senior at Sherwood High School, Olney, Md. is the son of Debra and Dr. Joseph Karitis, Capt. DC, USN, of Olney.

His Eagle Scout project was to rebuild a 20-foot by 9-foot bridge in The Friends Retirement Community in Sandy Springs, Md., with used utility poles and new decking.

Tripp has been accepted to The Citadel and to Norwich University and plans to make his decision shortly. His goal is to become an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
