Published February 24. 2011 05:00PM

Join "Adventures to the Ancients" to hike the Clear Run/Lynchwood Lake on the Pocono Plateau on Sunday, Feb. 27 from 1-5 p.m.

These "Adventures to the Ancients" hikes are in the Pocono area old growth forest and open space areas and are led by Bill Sweeney, an old growth forest enthusiast, botanist and long-time DCNR naturalist with Jacobsburg E. E. Center, and Don Miller, an open space advocate, long-time teacher, botanist and naturalist with Pocono Heritage Land Trust.

Hike participants will have an opportunity to explore both public and private old growth forest areas throughout the Pocono Region and experience the natural beauty of these often forgotten or sometimes secretive locations where the sawyers blades of foresters/lumbermen in decades past have left some small remnants of old tall timber trees.

Adventures to the Ancients hikes are free of charge with donations asked to support Pocono Heritage Land Trust's Preserve Management/Land Conservation Fund.

The next hike is the Clear Run / Lynchwood Lake on the Pocono Plateau Sunday, Feb. 27 from 1-5 p.m.

Scattered across the Pocono Plateau are remnants of old boreal forest that contain towering white pines and mature hemlocks and black spruce. This "Adventures to the Ancients" hike lead by Miller and Sweeney, will explore the far northern Canada-like dark forests along the banks of Clear Run, a headwater tributary to Tobyhanna Creek. On this hike participants will share in a guided investigation of a northern mixed coniferous old growth forest and pocket wetland habitat, an area of compromised forest and end with a walk around Lynchwood Lake, a former ice lake/summer camp lake on the former Camp Tegawitha property. This easy 3 to 3 and 1/2 hour hike is off trail on relatively level and mostly dry terrain and will be held snow or shine. Participants should be prepared to be outdoors in the wild Pocono's for several winter hours with gloves, hats, winter coats and boots required.

Lehigh Valley participants meet at Jacobsburg E. E. Center main parking lot off Belfast Road at 12 p.m. Pocono participants should meet at 1 p.m. in the main parking area in front of Clear Run Elementary Center located about 2 miles north of Mt. Pocono and 1 mile north of the Pocono Mountain Regional Airport on Rt. 611.

Registration required: Contact Bill Sweeney at Jacobsburg E.E. Center (610) 746-2808 or by e-mail
