DUI charges dominate district judge's docket

Driving under the influence (DUI) charges took up most of the docket last week in the court of District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua. One defendant failed to show for his preliminary hearing, with the charges bound over for court anyway.

John R. Muffley, 30, of 245 Van Gelder St., Tamaqua, was a no show last Tuesday but was bound over for court trial on charges of DUI, driving without a license, driving with a suspended/revoked license, failure to keep right, careless driving, driving with out a license, not wearing the proper headgear on a motorcycle. The charges were filed by Tamaqua Patrolman Matthew Bynon following a Nov. 9, 2010, incident.

Matthew R. Frederick, 22, of 114 N. Greenwood St., Tamaqua, elected to waive his right to a preliminary hearing. He was charged by Patrolman Bynon in connection with a March 14, 2010, incident. The charges included DUI and careless driving.

Frederick was released on his own reconizance.

Betty J. Dolly, 39, of 418 E. Patterson St., Lansford, was also charged with DUI by Patrolman Bynon. The charges stem from a Dec. 7, 2010, incident. Dolly elected to waive her preliminary hearing.

She was released on her own recognizance.

Hector Luis Berberena-Soto, 29, of 574 Carson St., Hazleton, waived a hearing on charges of DUI, driving without a license and driving at an unsafe speed. He was cited by Trooper Michael Marinchak following a Sept. 26, 2010, incident.

He was released on his own recognizance.

William Campbell Jr., 43, of 19 Crystal Lane, Barnesville, waived a hearing on charges of DUI, driving without a license and driving without the required headlights. He was charged by Rush Township Patrolman Adam Sinton following a Jan. 9 incident.

Campbell was released on his own recognizance.

Mark Steven Schmeer, 21, of 30 Market St., Kelayres, was charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia following a Nov. 5, 2010, incident. The charges were filed by Schuylkill County Detective Leo Securda.

Schmeer was released after posting the required ten percent of the $10,000 imposed bail.

Christine M. Evans, 27, of Hanover Township, waived a hearing on charges filed by Rush Township Cpl. Duane Frederick following a Jan. 31, 2010, incident. The charges include retail theft and receiving stolen property.

Evans was released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
