Pa. State Education Association donates to Summit Hill food pantry
AMY MILLER/TIMES NEWS Rose Marie Armon, director of the Summit Hill Food Pantry, left, accepts a check from Barb Sipler, president of the Eastern Region Office of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, center; and Joseph Sweeney, Panther Valley Education Association president. PSEA recently donated $200 to the food pantry to help with its operations.
In today's economy, families who are struggling receive help through local food pantries.
In Summit Hill, the food pantry serves nearly 140 families and supplies them with boxes filled with necessities and goodies and by the generosity of the community and various organizations holiday meats and trimmings.
Rose Marie Armon, director of the Summit Hill Food Pantry, is grateful for all the support the pantry receives from the borough's residents throughout the year, and was especially happy for a $200 donation she received recently from the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
"I think this is so wonderful," Armon said, noting that she is a past member of the education association. "This will help a lot."
She added that donations are what keep the pantry shelves filled because it has lost its state funding.
On Tuesday, representatives from the Eastern Region Office of the PSEA were present at the pantry and received a tour of the facility, which is located in the basement of the Summit Hill Heritage Center.
Barb Sipler, Eastern Region president, said that the PSEA chose the Summit Hill Food Pantry because of their need.
"They thought in this time of need, this would be a worthwhile cause," she said.
The PSEA represents more than 193,000 public school teachers and education support professionals, staff in higher education institutions, nurses in health care facilities, retired educators, and college students preparing to become teachers.
