Parryville Council adopts final budget for 2012, taxes rise 2 mills
Parryville Council on Tuesday night adopted the final budget for 2012. Because of the rising costs of engineering fees to comply with Act 537, a community-wide sewage facilities plan, Parryville Council had no other choice than to raise taxes by two mills this year. Millage is set for 2012 at 12.5 mills. The two-mill tax hike will happen again for 2013.
In Parryville, one mill generates approximately $5,000. A home assessed at $40,000 will pay an additional $80 a year in real estate taxes in 2012 due to the tax increase.
Parryville anticipates receiving $81,899 for general taxing purposes. Another $8,587 is allocated for fire protection and $20,162 is from the tax claim bureau. Occupational taxes will raise $1,138 and real estate transfer tax, $1,738; earned income tax, $31,131; local service tax, $1,262; local ordinances, $57; state police fines, $636; interest income, $190; rent of land, $212; intergovernmental revenue, $351; fees and permits, $1,525; solid waste, $40,412; miscellaneous, $200; restricted revenue, liquid fuels and foreign fire tax, $17,850.
Dana Brubaker said that for this month, Parryville has engineering fees of $3,831, which includes engineering fees for the salt shed and Act 537 engineering fees.
Last month Council opened bids for construction of the salt shed, with the contract awarded to low bidder, Home Solution Partners of Palmerton, who agreed to build the shed for $105,495. Construction has begun.
Grant said that there have been some change orders and that will cause the price of the to rise by $5,000 to $7,000. Council has stressed that building of the new salt shed is not responsible for the increase in taxes. Revenue for the shed will come out of the Liquid Fuels funds, which is built up by the taxes motorists pay on gasoline.
The borough receives approximately $15,000 a year from the Liquid Fuels Fund.
Grant noted that salt has been ordered and as soon as the shed is constructed, the delivery of the salt/cinders will be done within two to three days.
Council has adopted a property maintenance code and any residents who want to read the code can find the information on the borough's website.
