At the Slatington Borough Council meeting Mayor Walter Niedermeyer made a proclamation presention to two Slatington residents who went above and beyond as citizens of the Northern Lehigh area.

Wayne Sheckler, a mail carrier, helped an 84-year-old woman out of her burning home and then evacuated a hearing impaired neighbor before her home caught on fire. Sheckler was also nominated by the Slatington Fire department for the Spirit of Courage award, which he received.

Jason Hankee, who was not present, saw a dwelling fire and caught children who were jumping off the porch and then turned off the gas main. Both men were commended and honored for their heroic efforts.

In other business, the council is contemplating a potential tax rate change. They reviewed the budget and opened discussions at last night's meeting. Until discussions are complete they will not know what the new rate will be.
