A Jim Thorpe police officer was struck and injured Wednesday afternoon while directing traffic around a disabled vehicle.

The incident occurred along SR209 in Nesquehoning, about 5 p.m., according to reports.

The officer was identified as Joseph David. He had responded to the scene because Nesquehoning police were busy on another call.

According to state police, Officer David was directing traffic in the northbound lane because of a disabled motorist on the southbound side of the roadway. Flares were lighted in both directions of the roadway and David's unmarked police vehicle had its emergency lights activated and was parked on the southbound side of the roadway.

As OffIcer David stood in the northbound lane directing traffic southbound he was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound.

According to reports, a Nesquehoning police officer found David lying on the road and immediately called for medical assistance.

Nesquehoning ambulance and fire personnel responded to the scene.

David was flown by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. A hospital spokesperson said he was undergoing surgery for a leg injury.

The driver of the vehicle that struck David was identified as Robert Monroe, 51, of Albrightsville.

He was transported via EMS to Lehighton Hospital where he submitted to a blood test after advising police he had taken prescription Percocet earlier in the day.

Charges are pending the blood test results.

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joseph Schatz said state police at the Lehighton barracks are in charge of the investigation.
