Coal Cracker Classic mountain bike race scheduled Sept. 11

On Sunday, September 11, mountain bike enthusiasts will be tackling Tamaqua's hilly terrain as part of an annual race.

The Second Annual Coal Cracker Classic will be held in town as part of the Mid-Atlantic SuperSeries, one of the largest regional mountain bike races that has been held since 2000.Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission Executive Director Jason Boris and race directors Aaron Berger and Richard Chwastiak, both Tamaqua Area High School alumni, addressed the Tamaqua Area School Board at Tuesday's public meeting to thank the board for their support of the upcoming event and provide more information on the day's details.The race will begin at the high school and follow a 20 mile loop, ending at the Bungalow Park. Parking and staging will take place in the high school stadium's parking lot. Boris expects between 300 and 400 cyclists to compete.Cyclists of all levels are able to participate. The race will have three levels of ability with different starting times. "Sport will start at 9 a.m., expert level starts at 11 a.m., and beginner starts at 1 p.m.," Boris said. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and Boris said the event will conclude by mid-afternoon.Berger said the race organizers were pleased with the turnout for the first race last year, and says it's a great thing for the community. "Mountain biking used to be big in Tamaqua. It's sort of died out, but it's starting to come back," he said.A discount is offered for those who pre-register. Registration is available through
