The treasurer for a Monroe County church has been charged with stealing funds.

State police at Lehighton said Sharon Eleanor Getz, 50, of Effort, has been charged with theft by deception and receiving stolen property.Troopers allege that Getz, treasurer of Salem United Church of Christ in Gilbert, Polk Township, stole about $10,788.84 by writing unauthorized checks for personal reasons and failing to deposit funds from the weekly collections. The thefts occurred during the period of March 2010 and July 2011.She was arraigned before a district judge on the charges and released on $10,000 unsecured bail, troopers said.
