A young man honored his pledge to have his long locks cut if the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society reached a $2,000 goal.

The money was raised through the sale of paper balloons, which were sold for a donation of $1, and are commonly seen on the windows and walls of participating businesses.

Eric "Buddy" Turek Jr., an employee at the Jim Thorpe Market in Jim Thorpe, said he made the pledge with the hope that it would encourage more donations.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society exceeded its goal by raising $2,086 in balloon sales over the course of two weeks.

True to his word, Turek sat down in the Jim Thorpe Market to allow fellow market co-worker, Heather Formica, to have the honor of snipping off about 14 inches of his hair.

Turek's hair donation is going to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which creates real-hair wigs for women living with cancer. The money raised will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Turek said that he was very glad to help out the cancer society with the fundraiser, which was called "Light the Night."
