Bethlehem man drowns in Lehigh

A Bethlehem man, kayaking with friends in the Lehigh River on Sunday, drowned after he fell out of his kayak.

State police at Bethelehm identified the victim as Michael McDonald, 34.

According to troopers McDonald, with three friends, entered the Lehigh River in Lehighton. After entering Washington Township, in Lehigh Coutny, shortly after crossing under the SR873 bridge, McDonald fell out of his kayak, near the Slatington airport.

He struggled to swim to shore but was unable. One of his friends saw him in destriess and drug him to shore and summoned emergency personnel.

McDonald was transported to the Palmerton hospital where he was pronounced dead by the emergency room doctor at 3:35 p.m., troopers said.
