Published April 20. 2011 05:00PM

A Tamaqua man has been cited for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol following a Saturday, April 16, incident.

Officers were on patrol at 3:30 a.m. when they observed a white Chevrolet pick up truck spinning its tires in the area of Fegley's Mini Mart on Center Street. The officer activated his lights and sirens. The driver of the truck, later identified as William J. Bowman, 23, of 221 Owl Creek Rd., continued driving south at a high rate of speed ignoring the patrol car.

Bowman turned on to Owl Creek Road then parked in his driveway where he was immediately taken into custody. The officer noted a strong odor of alcohol as well as Bowman's stumbling gait and glassy eyes. Bowman was given and failed field sobriety tests then was taken to the Coaldale police station for a portable breath test. The results indicated a .15 percent blood alcohol content, almost twice the legal limit of .08.

Bowman was charged with attempting to flee/elude a police officer, DUI, reckless driving and careless driving.
