Help needed for RSVP program of Carbon Co.

Published April 13. 2011 05:01PM

The RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) of Carbon County is dedicated to providing help where help is needed in the community.

People over the age of 55 can make a difference in the services provided by non-profit agencies, and in the lives of people they serve.

Help throughout Carbon County is needed to transport the elderly to medical appointments and to help with shopping for food. Mileage reimbursement is provided for this program.

Also needed are people to deliver home delivered meals in the Lansford, Summit Hill and Nesquehoning areas. These meals are already prepared, packed and ready for delivery to area shut-ins who are no longer able to prepare and shop for food on their own. Mileage reimbursement, provided by the Carbon County Area Agency of Aging, is available to volunteers who engage in this community service.

Sewers are always needed by local sewing groups who meet weekly to make lap robes and knotted quilts to give to nursing homes, disaster relief or wherever most needed.

RSVP has many other volunteer opportunities at libraries, food pantries, hospitals, thrift shops, volunteer home care, and through the county Area Agency of Aging in their Apprise Counseling and Ombudsman programs and at other non-profit organizations throughout Carbon County.

RSVP is part of Senior Corps of Pennsylvania and is sponsored by Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries. Insurance coverage is provided for volunteers while they are volunteering.
