A man from the Bronx, N.Y., was cited for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol in Tamaqua on Thursday.

Andrew W. Hewett, 41, was discovered in the middle of North Railroad Street at 3:01 a.m. behind the wheel of a white Dodge Nitro bearing a North Carolina license plate. Hewett was discovered by a Rush Township patrolman who was assisting with a search for burglary suspects.

When Officer Sinton saw the Dodge stopped in the middle of the roadway he approached the vehicle and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver, Hewett, and called for borough police. When Hewett exited the vehicle, he stumbled and fell multiple times. He was then given a portable breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol content of .158, almost twice the legal limit of .08.

The vehicle was impounded.
