Schuylkill bus authority holds first meeting since creation

Published September 30. 2010 05:00PM

Establishing communication lines with ReDC0 for transferring operation of the Schuylkill Transportation System (STS) bus line were among the topics discussed by the newly formed Schuylkill County Transportation Authority at its first meeting since its reorganization meeting held in August, which took place late Wednesday afternoon at the courthouse in Pottsville. The next three monthly meetings will be held at the STS Complex in Saint Clair.

The bus line is owned by the county which turned over operation to ReDCo and pays it an annual fee of $338,000. When the authority takes control of operatng the bus line in January the county hopes it can reduce its payments and also use the money it gives to the authority to be used for upgrading the system.

The board established a meeting agenda and the next three meetings will be held on Oct. 27, Nov. 17 and Dec. 29. All meetings will start at 5 p.m.

Additional staff needs were discussed which are now provided by ReDCo. The authority is asking $25,000 from the county for the transition period and designated the First National Bank of Minersville as its depository. Discussed items related to policies and procedures for current STS staff including carryover of accured vacation, personal and sick hours, seniority, union and non union.

Also communication lines are being established with the union represented the workers. Creation and adoption of bylaws will be discussed at future meetings as Solicitor Peter Corse could not attend the meeting.
