Carbon resident named new chief U.S. probation officer

A Carbon County resident has been appointed chief U.S. probation officer for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, based in Scranton.

Anthony C. Harvilla, of Tresckow, was promoted from senior probation officer to chief probation officer covering 33 counties in the district.

Harvilla is a former chief probation officer for Carbon County. He held that position until he was appointed a probation officer for the U.S. Middle District many years ago.

Harvilla will head a staff of 57 from the Scranton office with divisional offices in Wilkes-Barre, Harrisburg and Williamsport. He takes over his new job on Friday.

Harvilla is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcement and corrections. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Marywood University.

He is married and has two daughters.
