K of C, Palmerton parish collect for orphanage
TERRY AHNER/TIMES NEWS Al Kohler, left, William "Billy" Kurtz, Father Campion, Father Sandy and George Kattner gather after mass at the Sacred Heart Parish Church in Palmerton for the check presentation to the One Love Foundation.
Help is indeed on the way for the children of St. Mary's Orphanage in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
That's thanks in no small part to the Knights of Columbus, in association with the Sacred Heart Parish Church in Palmerton.
A second collection was taken up at the church this past weekend, where the Knights of Columbus presented Father James Sandy with a $1,000 donation toward the cause.
"This doesn't come to me as a surprise because that's what the Knights of Columbus stand for; charity and fraternity," Father. Sandy said. "What you have given us is much appreciated."
Father Sandy, who offered summer relief for several parish priests at the church's Allentown Diocese, also thanked Father William Campion, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish Church.
All parishioners were asked to help Fr. Sandy in his mission in Sierra Leone to support St. Mary's Orphanage and several school projects.
Monetary donations to help offset shipping costs of $7,000 and provide for expansion of the current orphanage to house more children were accepted until earlier this month at the rectory.
A large container of supplies will once again be shipped later this month by the One Love Foundation, which supports the orphanage and schools in Fr. Sandy's diocese.
Two preschools have been built in Sierra Leone. In addition, the orphanage successfully dug a deed well which will provide many with a fresh water source, and has provided opportunities for children to further their education.
Toiletries and hygiene products, nonperishable food items, medical and school supplies, children's shoes and clothing, bicycles, sports jerseys and sneakers, religious items, mattresses, computers, small generators, printers, water pumps, medicine and medical equipment were among the items sought.
