Ashland widow seeking to sell golf course to pay off husband's debts

Published September 27. 2010 05:00PM

The widow of the owner of a financially stressed golf course located in the Ashland area is seeking help from the Schuylkill County court to sell the course to pay off all of her husband's debts.

The suit was started by Elizabeth Wetzel, executor the estate of Clair Wetzel, 26 Rolling Meadows Road, Ashland, who was owner of the Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Ashland R.D. According to the suit the property is encumbered by a mortgage on a line of credit as well as liens for unpaid real estate taxes.

Under the terms of Clair Wetzel's will, stocks in the golf course were distributed to his three children, Brian Wetzel, Fort Myers, Fla.; Robert Wetzel, The Colony, Tex.; and Marilyn Jones, Carmel Falls, Calif.

The widow, who is executrix of her husband's will, claims the Rolling Meadows Golf Course Inc. has no liquid assets at this time and she is unable to pay the indebtedness which has matured.

Mrs. Wetzel reports she has received only one offer to buy the club and it was from Wally Fetterolf last August who made an offer of $450,000, which was the appraisal reached by the Schuylkill County Orphans's Court. The suit states the golf course was put up for sale by the Schuylkill County Tax Claim Bureau in 2008 and in 2009 received an offer and the settlement was to take place Oct. 20.

However, Mrs. Wetzel claims the children expressed continuation of operating the golf course and when they learned of the sale offer, they opposed it as not being sufficient money

In her suit, Mrs. Wetzel is asking the court to appoint a receiver for the golf course and to grant him authority to sell the golf course and the proceeds to be used to insure all of her husband's debts are properly paid.
