Lehigh incident ends tragically

A Lehigh County incident ended tragically on Saturday when a despondent male took his life after state police negotiated with the man for several hours to try and resolve the situation.

State police at Fogelsville were called to 1203 Eagle St., in the Shepherd Hills development, in Lower Macungie Township, about 8:23 a.m. to a report of a despondent male who was barraicaded in his residence.Upon arrival troopers were told by family members that Trevor D. Sterner, 39, of that address, had a handgun and had made threats of suicide following a family dispute.Troopers evacuated the home and notified neighbors and then set up a safe perimeter. The state police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was called to the scene.A negotiator with SERT made contact with Sterner and for several hours attempted to peacefully resolve the incident. About 7 p.m. a state police robot entered the home and located Sterner. Troopers said he was deceased after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner's office.
